I just wanted to say that there have been a lot of murders and vicious crimes in Belize lately, that have not been limited to Belize City.... 3 friends of ours have been murdered in the past couple months (not to mention over 6 people in this past month alone)...Belizeans, Americans, people are desperate and will do anything for money.

Particularly if you are visiting Belize, don't stay out late at night and act carefree-- because it may feel safe but it is not right now... I used to tell people that if they used taxis at night they were for the most part safe (since we know all the taximen in the area), but an American girl who had only been in Belize 3 days was just raped and her fingers chopped by a Machete. I am telling you this not to scare everyone off about Belize, but a reminder not to be too naive, as it can still be a dangerous paradise. Use your street smarts, don't wear nice jewelry and in general, don't draw a lot of attention to yourself. I know that at least one person on this board is currently living in San Ignacio and probably knew Mike and Donna Hill (American retireers who were murdered just outside San Ignacio, at their home in Cristo Rey)...may they rest in peace....these were GOOD, loving, people, who gave back to the Belizean people in a million different ways and yet were still senselessly murdered. Please be safe and have fun in Belize while still being cautious.

I am sorry to be the bearer of sad and upsetting news...but Andy Palacio [of andy palacio and the garifuna collective] has died tonight. He will be greatly missed and this news has truly upset myself and no doubt many others across the world. May he rest in peace... here is more information:

"Belizean Musician Andy Palacio Passes Away After Heart Attack and Stroke

January 19, 2008 - Andy Palacio, an iconic musician and cultural activist in his native Belize and impassioned spokesperson for the Garifuna people of Central America, was declared dead tonight at 9pm Belize time due to a massive and extensive stroke to the brain, a heart attack and respiratory failure due to the previous two conditions.

Palacio, 47, started feeling poorly last week and eventually visited a doctor with complaints of dizziness and blurred vision. On the 16th of January, he began experiencing seizures and was rushed to a hospital in Belmopan, Belize and then on to another hospital in Belize City. At this point, most people were hopeful Palacio would recover.

On January 17th, Palacio's condition worsened and he began experiencing more seizures. He was placed on an air ambulance to Chicago where he was expected to get treatment at one of the premier neurological facilities in the country. En route to Chicago, the plane stopped in Mobile, Alabama to clear immigration. At that point, Palacio was unconscious and it was determined that he was too ill to continue on the flight to Chicago. He was rushed to a hospital in Mobile, and placed on life support. There, doctors determined that the damage to his brain function was severe, and that his chances of recovery were slim. On January 18th, his family requested that he be flown back to Belize so that he might die in his homeland.

A national hero in Belize for his popular music and advocacy of Garifuna language and culture, news of Palacio's condition sent shockwaves through the community. At 5pm today, a public service was held in Belize City for Palacio as people prayed for his recovery. Ceremonies were also held by Garifuna spiritual leaders in an effort to help with the situation. Belize is in the midst of a heated election, but the local news was entirely dominated by Palacio's health crisis.

The reaction has also been strong around the world. Until the recent turn of events, the past year had been one of tremendous accomplishment for Palacio as his album Wátina, which was released at the beginning of 2007, had become one of the most critically acclaimed recordings of the year in any genre. Perhaps the most unanimously revered world music album in recent memory, Wátina appeared on dozens of Best of the Year lists in major media outlets around the globe and was roundly praised in glowing terms.

In 2007, Palacio was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace and won the prestigious WOMEX Award. Wátina was also nominated for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards. At home in Belize, the international success of Wátina has sparked a revival of Garifuna music, as young musicians have become inspired by Palacio's example. Even in the days since Palacio's health crisis began, the accolades have continued to pour in for his work.

That Palacio has been struck down at a moment of such international acclaim only increases the sense of shock and tragedy felt at his sudden and untimely death.

Andy Palacio will be honored with an official state funeral. A massive tribute concert is planned in Belize City on Friday, January 25th.

Friends and supporters are invited to post messages in memory of Andy Palacio to his MySpace page (www.myspace.com/andypalacio) as well as to the blog of his international record label Cumbancha (http://cumbanchamusic.blogspot.com/). "

Hi all,

My wife and I just got back from Belize. We got a lot of great tips from this tribe, so I thought I would provide a little up-to-date report. We went in the middle of december, 2006.

All in all, we had a really fantastic time. we started in san pedro at the Victoria House. Nice place for pampering, you get all the high-end hotel amenities that you can't really get anywhere else on the island, abundant towels, afternoon tear-down service, laundry service, etc. The little casitas were cute, and I thought I would enjoy the rustic experience by not bringing the laptop to watch DVDs on at the last minute. It was a noble decision, but we got lots of rain while in san pedro, and we sort of wished we had some sort of entertainment. We ended up just drinking One Barrel and playing scrabble and cards. The biggest problem with Victoria House is that it is far from the main town. Not that far, but the road is completely wasted with potholes, so it takes awhile to get to town, and it is even harder when it is raining.

Good food all around in San Pedro. Lots of local lobster. Bacon wrapped shrimp. Fish or conch fritters are everywhere. Seemed cleaner than anywhere in Mexico, we never had any digestive problems.

San pedro is a pretty rustic town, with the sand streets and all. The vibe is really good. Lots of little kids out playing soccer in the alleys. Both tourists and locals filling the streets on the warm nights. Anything you might want to help enhance your vacation is easily available in San Pedro.

All of our tours... just going out to snorkel, mayan ruins, etc were well worth the money. The trip to Laminai is as exciting as the ruins themselves. You blast down this network of rivers, seeing alligators, birds, Meninite farming communities, etc. We used Sea-rius tours, and we really enjoyed the local guides all of who had grown up there.

One of our favorite things about san pedro was the long beach that you could bike on. Rolling down the beach in between the palm trees with the little resorts and bars on one side and the pristine water on the other.. good stuff. On one rainy day we passed by two Rasta guys. We chatted, they showed us their carvings for sale, but my wife mentioned she wanted some black coral. One of them hopped on his bike and we were off on a crazy adventure with him that included waking up a shop owner from her siesta, picking out jewelry with him, and finally ending in a local reggae bar drinking Belikins and eating fish fritters. It was just the sort of random encounter that made San Pedro fun.

After 5 nights in San Pedro, we moved on to Caye Caulker. Now, don't get me wrong, we really enjoyed San Pedro, and as we were leaving I thought we had had a fantastic vacation up until thatpoint. But Caye Caulker was really more of our vibe. Much more laid back. More of a youthful, backpacker vibe. The village reminded us a lot of the town of Hanalei, on the north side of Kauai. Seaside Cabanas was about 100 dollars cheaper a night than Victoria House. We enjoyed the cabanas up front with the private roof decks where you can sit in a hammock under a thatched roof. Good stuff, especially at night when you are partying a bit.

I appreciated the tip on the One Barrel rum. I don't know what it is about it, it is not particularly unique or anything, it is just really drinkable. I started mixing it one night with soda, juice and ice. Then just soda and ice. Then just the One Barrel and ice. And then, yes, I was pouring it straight and drinking it. Mmmm, nice buzz.

Not so impressed with Belikin. When I am on vacation I love mexican beer, Pacifico, Sol. Belikin was nothing like those. But, it is ubiquitous. Most bars had two choices when it came to beer, Belikin in a bottle or Belikin on tap. You learn to like it... I guess.

The best part of Belize was the people. Everyone is very educated and friendly. You can strike up a conversation with any local at any time, and they will happily talk your ear off about anything. I mentioned to the record store owner on Caye Caulker that I liked his reggae tunes kept the vibe up on the street even during the rain, and he thanked me and then went off for literally 15 minutes about how the Swiss newcomer across the street running a jewelry store hates it. And how its the law that can play his music until midnight any day of the week. Just one example.

Anyway, enough rambling. A few photos here:

I just booked a 6 day, 5 night trip to Belize for December 16th to the 22nd. I can't wait to see the beautiful country and visit some amazing Mayan Ruins. I am part of a site called www.CouchSurfing.com that helps travellers meet locals who can show them around, meet for a drink, give recommendations or (ideally) help them out with a place to stay for a few nights. Really, what I would like if nothing else is good advice on how to best spend my time there, and some must see's. Don't worry if it's not in Belize City, if it's good enough I'll find a way there.

If you are at all interested in hosting me for some of my trip, here's some needed info: I have hosted well over 70 guests from all around the world at my San Francisco apartment, so I know very well what it means to be a good guest. I don't just want a place to stay, but rather make a meaningful connection with someone who is as excited about life as I am. You can learn all about me here: http://www.couchsurfing.com/jesseln Feel free to respond to this post or email me at lostinmyownhead@hotmail.com. I would be happy to return the favor should anyone who helps me in my endeavor (in any way) with a couch in San Francisco!

I was wondering about what Belize regulars recommend in terms of use of anti-malaria drugs. My doctor was recommending them as a precaution, but I keep hearing from others who travel to Belize to not bother, and that the side-effects are sometimes bad, and the overall risk for malaria in Belize is low. Getting malaria would not be good of course!!

We're unbelievably excited about this and just really pumped up about it, and I was just hoping to get some general info from fellow tribers. Like, what's the cheapest way of getting there? Is there ways to pick up work on the island (I'm fluent in English and Spanish, have worked in some tourism outfits, and she speaks English and sort-of Spanish and has experience working on sail boats, and is looking to get her Captain's licence and work in that general environment)? What's the best place to live? What's the visa scenario like in terms of working down there? etc, etc, etc......

I'm wondering if those of you living there have felt any change in your level of safety or comfort. I'm wondering if these crimes are circumstantial or if it is random? It appears to be mostly economic desperation from unemployment and otherwise related to drugs and the rest seem to be crimes of passion.

My concern is about the impact an ex-pat has on the socio-political environment. If I arrive with outside income, spend it in Belize, it seems good for the economy of tourism but as I have read that also has a price. I have read a few local articles about the imbalance and how some native Belizeans feel a power imbalance and a return to indentured servitude and slavery like dichotomy. It seemed like there was little else for the Belizeans I met to do but to work as it came from the foreigners who paid less than living wage but more than nothing... It was sad to think I was contributing to this. Of course when I wanted to talk about it, I was told it wasn't my place and I agree - to a point.

I want to know that my studies and work there are for better and not contributing to an increasingly desperate situation. I need to know that I am a part of the solution and not the problem.
Please feel free to share your thoughts on this, I really am interested in all opinions.
February is the high tourist season at the resort and the best time to dive. Water temperature averages 79-82 degrees.

This trip is $1,999 per person. Send me a message if you're interested or call me at 415-948-7661 and we can chat. Note that I didn't set the price and I make nothing from the trip.

I will be your "man on the ground" there, taking care of any problems, helping guide those on dives that desire guidance, providing free scuba tuneups/rusty diver course for those that want it and in general making sure you don't have to lift a finger if you don't want to. Of course I'll be having fun too but I want to retire into the diving biz so this will be a working thing for me as well as fun.

I am in the process of planning a trip from Montreal, Canada to Bocquete, Panama (loose destination - no timetable). Originaly I wanted to to it on motorcycle, but now think I'll do it by car (most likely).

This will require crossing thru (USA of course), Mexico/Belize, Guatemala, El Savador or Hondras, Nicarugua, and Costa Rica. And, my Spanish is extremely limited ... at the moment.

Has anyone driven much of ANY of these countries ... and what advise can you give me regarding border crossings, highway police, stopping roadside, licenses required, etc..

Also I'd love to work or find sustainability along the way if anyone has ANY work or work-for-shelter tips or ideas.

I have been living in a little house in San Ignacio, in the Cayo District (very lovely). I've been teaching organic farming to kids and making school gardens which has been such a wonderful experience. But for those of you who have lived here for an extended period of time, not just toured, wouldnt you say your experience is far different from that of a tourist? As much as I love the relaxation and vibes here, there is just so much more going on, entertainment-wise (art, dances, gatherings, groups, etc) where I come from in California. I've met my partner here in Belize and it is such a struggle wondering where we will end up living...any opionions? on everything from a simple life, to not having money if you live in belize (like if i wanted to visit my family in ca sometime)...thanks!

Check out this message that I just received. It seems that Tribe now likes to come in and take people's url's.

Just because I had a good idea first shouldn't mean they can take it from me without any sort of fight. What sort of 'community building' is that by making the members feel they can be stepped on at any time?

If the community feels that Tribe should own this URL, feel free to let me know and I will just give it up. However, if you don't think they should take it (or the larger issue of any other URL for that matter) please discuss here and let them know how you feel.

Hi there.

I'm Walter, and I work with Tribe.net's community to make members aware of new features and to help manage activity on our service.

In a few weeks, Tribe.net will unveil a new main page that links directly to listings, Tribes and members in different cities. To make this work smoothly, we're re-acquiring some of the URLs that members selected for their Tribes.

You're receiving this note because we'll need to use one of the URLs you selected for a Tribe you moderate.

I realize that your URL might be important to you, but in return for the link, we'll spotlight your Tribe prominently for new and existing members.

This change is slated to occur on or about September 17, so you have plenty of time to select a new public URL for your Tribe.

Thanks for working with us to make Tribe.net easier and more fun to use. If you have any questions, please reply to this message, and I'll get back to you.

Regards,

-- Walter.
