I just wanted to say that there have been a lot of murders and vicious crimes in Belize lately, that have not been limited to Belize City.... 3 friends of ours have been murdered in the past couple months (not to mention over 6 people in this past month alone)...Belizeans, Americans, people are desperate and will do anything for money.
Particularly if you are visiting Belize, don't stay out late at night and act carefree-- because it may feel safe but it is not right now... I used to tell people that if they used taxis at night they were for the most part safe (since we know all the taximen in the area), but an American girl who had only been in Belize 3 days was just raped and her fingers chopped by a Machete. I am telling you this not to scare everyone off about Belize, but a reminder not to be too naive, as it can still be a dangerous paradise. Use your street smarts, don't wear nice jewelry and in general, don't draw a lot of attention to yourself. I know that at least one person on this board is currently living in San Ignacio and probably knew Mike and Donna Hill (American retireers who were murdered just outside San Ignacio, at their home in Cristo Rey)...may they rest in peace....these were GOOD, loving, people, who gave back to the Belizean people in a million different ways and yet were still senselessly murdered. Please be safe and have fun in Belize while still being cautious.

Re: Violence/Crime is On the Rise-- Please be careful!
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 1:24 PMThis is sad. What is triggering it? Bad economic situation? Gangs? Is there any influx of foreigners or anything that it is related to?
Crime like this always bothers me. Its one thing to mug someone and take money. Senseless violence is more incomprehensible.

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 2:23 AMMy condolences, dear heart, I am sorry for your loss.
I wanted to move to Belize for a few years and now that things have turned, I will be traveling in Asia for a while. Seems like the prime minister's choices have had a very poor trickle down effect. I pray for Belize and her people. -

Re: Violence/Crime is On the Rise-- Please be careful!
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 9:45 AMIn my opinion, a few things are triggering crime (but this is just my guess...)... #1: Lack of opportunities [jobs/education/etc/] #2: Prices Soaring [gas/food/electric/etc.] #3: Desiring material crap [influence of media].... #4: New generation that want to live differently than their parents [indigenous loss of knowledge, particularly with agriculture, is lost]
...oh...and general hopelessness... for example, Mike and Donna Hill were murdered by 15 and 17 yr olds. The 15 yr. old had just been out on bail from Hattieville prison for breaking his girlfriends' arms [this kid is obviously sick and twisted]...then he could not afford his $4,000 fees in lawyers that got him out of prison.... hopeless, he robbed his employers [Mike and Donna, who to my knowledge were unaware he had recently been in prison] and killed them because he knew that they would report him and put him back in prison... hopelessness, desperation...lack of education...no money... lack of family structure [there are a LOT of broken homes in Belize]...
this is my take on it... and it's not to say there was never violence in Belize (both of my husbands' grandfathers were murderd by knife in the 1990s], but there is even more violence today.... things are tough in belize, barely any jobs and the jobs that exist are low wage with no increase in pay as prices rise... -

Re: Violence/Crime is On the Rise-- Please be careful!
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 6:19 PMI live on the very outskirts of CR, I knew Donna well from our work with the San Ignacio Humane Society. They were robbed and murdered... reasons don't matter.
They caught the 15 and 17 yr olds with the weapon and the truck, spending $ they should not have had. Ok so after the hoopla of all of the investigations and Embassy crap... well, Trial I believe is pending?
It's what we chose to do after the fact now that matters. Certainly nothing will bring them back is the feeling of many of us who have had ties with the Hills.
Frankly I've chosen to think more and be more careful than ever. HOWEVER I will not live my life anywhere coming from a place of fear.
Like anywhere else, BAD things happen to Good people. It just makes sense to deal with grief and reality so it doesn't happen more than it does.
