Spent many months there in the 80's, mainly in Corozal District. Of course I was missing and presumed dead at the time... If only someone had told me.

Ahhh Belize, I went there last year and did some cave tubing and jungle hiking. Amazing. All I could think about was "wow, National Geographic wasn't kidding". This place is beautiful people. I sooo wanna go back. PS: A shameless plug, check out my tribe people "coasttocoast". Tell me a funny story, I have a few of my own.

Just got back a few days ago.

          LOVED IT!

I spent most of my time working, so I didn't get to do much sightseeing. Only got to go to Xunantunich and to Caye Caulker (and a couple of hours a week on a bus to Belmopan to get to email access!).

          Can't wait to go back!

I was in Ambergris Caye and it was great, however, the smaller island just south of it (I can't remember the name) is less touristy, cheaper, and just as beautiful. Ambergris realy relies on the fact that its the largest and most developed island and charges three times as much for everything. If you go, have a Beliken for me.

I've been... a couple years ago. Got to go with the Maya Research Program. I was in Blue Creek (Orange Walk District) for about 4 weeks, and spent a week going all around (mostly San Pedro).

I may be going back in Dec. with a friend from Guatemala.

Getting ready to go for last 2 weeks of Dec and can't wait! true to form, though, i'm leaving everything last minute ...i've never been but it now looks like it might actually be hard to find a place to stay.. at least on Caye Caulker.

Anyone have any thoughts on need for advance booking, or recs on places to stay in Ambergris Caye? I found a place i could book for wk 1, but thinking my chances are better for wk 2 (over X-mas) on Amergris because its bigger???

              Yeah, ~M is right,

If you have two weeks, you should definitely go inland.

Go to Cayo and check out the jungle, and the Mayan "ruins" Cahal Pech and Xunantinich.

And, definitely go to Tikal. You'll need at least 3 days to do it right.

day 1: Leave Belize City or Cayo and head to your lodgings in Guate.
day 2: Spend all day at Tikal.
              day 3: Return to Belize.

NOTE: The above is simply a quickie Tikal-centric excursion. Of course there are other interesting things to do/see in Guate, but two weeks would stretch you quite thin.

I spent a couple of days in Belize City and a few more out on Glover's Reef. Awesome place. Can't wait to get back. My favorite spot was out on the reef rock, watching the sunrise.

yeah, there was sightings of a hammerhead earlier that day so we stayed pretty close to shore! nice to see the fireworks light up the warm moonlit water though.

Inland is most defiantly the answer! I was there for 2 weeks in 99 and as i have read in theses post I almost moved there and may someday soon I went inland as far as san Ignacio (near Guatemala) and climbed Xunantunich

Belize captured my imagination and my heart. I found after living in Guatemala for most of the 90's a fresh new Central America, a young nation with the spirit of adventure and friendly optamism. Props to Belize for it's stance against global power elite calling the shots and Belize has passed by alot of quick cash in exchange for it's true economic independance, as have I. I have to remind mysef I own very little but I own what I have and own nothing. That is a place of wealth both Belize and I share. I'll be back, maybe soon what with an impending draft this summer and the economic realities of The United States right now looking rather bleek, Belize looks better by the day. Did I just say that out loud?

Me too. Of course, I said, "Yeah, but I got one of these my backyard at home...."

        Me!

Diving, mostly. During the second full moon of the year when the corals 'smoke' - the 'smoke' is actually the releasing of their gamates to float and (possibly) be joined with those of opposite gender. This represents the sexual reproduction phase - many corals reproduce both sexually and asexually (budding).

There have been a handful of other times in my life when I have been as complely awstruck and one with the universe.
