Caye Culker is a cool isand that is a little less touristy then Anbergris Caye a lot cheaper and is just as amazing. Ambergris has a few more night spots, although quite trashy and plenty of drugs offered up by the locals trying to take advantage of Americans. Could be fun if thats what you're looking for.

If going to the Cayes, I'd also recommend Caulker over Ambergris. We found all the "nightspots" in Ambergris to be populated by (1) the underaged drinking crowd looking to paaaaartee, and (2) their parents with a what-happens-on-vacation-stays-on-vacation attitude.

Everyone else in between those two generations seemed somewhat bored with the cheap drinks and worst cover bands in the world.

Of course, the whole reason to go Belize is experience nature...the rainforests, the diving/snorkeling. Lots of ruins to look at if that's your thing as well.

Oh no! Weazie, when were you guys in Ambergris Caye?

I was there back in November 2001 and it was a very laidback crowd. A lot of European backpackers, but that was about it. But then I didn't spend too much time at the bars in town, so maybe I didn't notice Buffy and Muffy all giddy because they can down cosmos without all the hassle of the Hamptons. And, sadly, no one offered to sell me any drugs!

I hope Ambergris Caye is not on its way to becoming the next Cancun. That would be a tragedy indeed.

Kelly, if you do go to Ambegris Caye, I recommend having dinner at Capricorn, a restaurant/guesthouse north of town. They will send a skiff to pick you up at your dock. Great food, wonderful atmosphere. It was so fantastic that I actually ate there twice. The Jerk Pit in the heart of town is also quite good. And, on the weekends, you might be able to get a cheap yet delicious meal in the adjacent courtyard where locals come and set up their own food concessions.

There's some great diving there, too. I dove with Amigos del Mar. They are fun and reliable, and they only run small boats/groups. The trip out to dive the Blue Hole is well worth it. And if you are just snorkeling, then the Hol Chan Marine Park is pretty cool.

Again, it's been three years since I was there, and it sounds like things may have gone down hill. FYI

"Just" back (was there July 2004). Sounds like Ambergris then is Caulker now.

It isn't Cancun...yet. I too had kids (like 8 or 9!) try to sell me drugs. Very sad.

But the food stalls are still there. I'd recommend them--same yummy native food you can get at restaurants, but at a fraction of the price. Of course, many restaurants have focused their menus away from traditional dishes and onto what Americans want (pizza, hamburgers, etc.).

Did the Hol Chan tour, and it was great. Swimming (literally) with the sharks and rays....

Would you recommend flying into Cancun and busing to Caye Caulker? IS it actually cheaper this way and if so is it a pain to do it this way? Sounds like a great place for our sweet honeymoon...needing a little help with planning from you all.
This is my idea so far:
Fly to Cancun and bus to Caye Caulker for one week stay---where to stay, what to experience with adventure(snorkling) and food?
Then bus to San Ignacio for one week stay (Chaa Creek) for a workshop at Ix Chel Farm.
Then to some Maya Ruins---where and which ones do you recommend? and where to stay there, etc.?

Things I wish to experience in general---epic snorkling, deep relaxation, good food, horseback riding in the rainforest, caving???, visiting MAya ruins...

            Thanks for your help!

We were in Belize in Feb this year.
We flew from San Francisco to Belize international and then took a puddle jumper to Caye Caulker. You can also take a water taxi. It costs less but is 2 hours vs. 8 minutes.
Caye Caulker can be done cheap or expensive.
www.gocayecaulker.com is a great resource to scope out places to stay. We rented a nice cabana from Maxapin for 65 a night, but you can find nice places for as little as 15-20.

Go snorkling with Juni, he can be found across the street from the basketball court. $35.00
for an amazing adventure. Check my blog for the story.

We also stayed at Ian Anderson's Retreat and went to Tikal and did the ATM Cave. I could have skipped the 5 hour drive to Tikal, but don't miss the ATM Cave....best ruin's I've ever seen.

              Good luck.

Me, personally, I wouldn't bus from Cancun to Belize City (obviously you are not taking a bus directly to Caye Caulker!). But that's my thing: I wouldn't want to be on a bus that long.

The cayes will offer the deep relaxation and epic snorkeling, no problem. Food is good everywhere. The horseback riding, caving, and ruins, however, are all on the mainland. If if it was me, I wouldn't "day trip" it back to the mainland to do all that while on the cayes. Rather, I'd find somewhere inland, and do all those activities from a base there, and not shuttle to and from the cayes.

The day-long boat/overland excursion from Caye Calker to the Lanai ruin was very cool. But, next time I visit Belize, I do want to stay overnight inland more.

I was fine just staying on the cayes the whole time for my first visit.

I live in Cayo outside of San Ignacio... Xuantunich, Caracoal, the ATM cave, Cave Tubing, a quick trip to Guatemala for a look at Tikal, there is so mucc right here that I go to the coast and am ready to come back to Cayo...

Love Punta Gorda and Caye Caulker. I tend to stay away from what I consider overtouristed areas like the uppermost Cayes and I don;t hang out in Belize City.

The zoo was featured in Nite Line and is really quite good. I was there with the former vet last year feeding baby jag cubs and monkeys. Yep Belize is a blast and has so much variety...

Lamani is on my list but not until I've finished looking around my district first... too much heaven, so much time...

              Astrid:
You'll be here in February...cool. It's a great time to be here, perfect weather and all. I read your expected log that you posted, and flying into Cancun is probably the best idea. I've had friends save up to $800 by flying into Cancun. Be sure and party in Cancun for a day; it can be over touristy, to say the least, but it still is a fun place to party, and the music there is the best; way better than what you'll here in Belize. The bus from Cancun to Chetumal is 5 or 6 hours, and it's a really nice bus; the busses in Mexico make Greyhound look like port a potties - who'd have thought? When crossing the border make sure you don't pay any exit tax to Mexico since you'll be flying out of Cancun too.
From Chetumal to Belize City will take 3 or so hours. Then you could take the water taxi to Caulker. One thing about Caulker...it's way small. I mean, I will never spend more than a night at a time there again. I'd recommend staying there maybe 2 nights. You must do Raggamuffin's Hol Chan Marine Reserve Tour. They kick ass, and Hol Chan is really neat with all the nurse sharks and sting rays(all very docile) I'm actually taking a bunch of students to Hol Chan again this weekend - do it a couple times a semester. Staying on Caulker - I always have people ask where is the cheapest, so I recommend Bella's Hostel, but it sounds like you might want something a little nicer...
You'll want to see Placencia, for sure. Caulker doesn't have a beach, in fact there's only one beach in Belize, and that's Placencia. I just won a long weekend in Placencia 'cos my Halloween costume was sooo kick ass. I try to do Placencia 3 or 4 times a year. There's a gelatto place there that's amazing!!! I swear a couple months ago we spent over $100 there in the course of one long weekend. I recommend Deb and Dave's Last Resort 'cos it's cool and rustic and quaint.
You might want to do Dangriga for a couple days, but some people don't like Dangriga that much. There are a lot of drummers there, and you'll hear some good drumming while there.
San Ignacio(Cayo) is the place to be. I noticed you mentioned the Ix Chel Wellness Center. My girlfriend starts there in a month. Rosita is way cool. A couple months ago in Placencia, we all stayed together and had an amazing time. I'm a Neuro-Muscular Therapist, so Rosita and I get along well. There's soooo much to do in Cayo that I don't see why people go anywhere else. Mountain Pine Ridge is kick ass; it has at least 6 major sights there, and Rio On Pools is why I bought a car! You can also horseback ride at Mountain Equestrian Trails. Caracol is a really neat ruin, and is the biggest in Belize. Barton Creek Cave and ATM cave are really neat too. There's also Cahal Pech and Xuanantunich in the way of smaller ruins. There's a ton of good places to eat and hang out in Cayo too. Check out my Best of Cayo page at: www.shc.edu.bz/marcus/cou...yobest.html
I see you mentioned Chaa Creek! I've given some massages there. The spa there is top notch. It's a neat place. I'm surprised it's not on the www.unusualhotelsoftheworld.com/ website yet. I recommend it and Parrot's Nest, which is right on the Mopan river, and is where I hang out a lot, and tube the river all the time. The Nest is also rustic and quaint, yet well priced, and for some reason doesn't have mosquitoes. I guarantee you'll see the over 20 iguanas at the same time on the riverbank there. Oh yeah, Chaa Creek has a Butterfly farm you'll want to check out. If you can, see the zoo. It's really neat to see the animals in their actual habitats and not in concrete pens. And while tubing the Mopan is awesome, the best tubing in Central America is at Jaguar Paw. Words won't do it justice.
Hope this helps. My number is 660.6336. You guys should give me a call, and we'll hit Mountain Pine Ridge or something. Rio On Pools rocks!
              Peace out,
              -MM

Wow...such amazing info! So many good points...
I am curious to learn more about the bus from Cancun. I tried to go onto "Uno's" bus site to see the schedule etc. as I heard this is a good bus to take form the Cancun airport over to the border...so do you know of a way I can book something? Then, once over the border how to get to Belize city...which bus, etc. Thanks so much for your help. This is great.
That is really interesting to hear your reco for only a few nights on the Caye Caulker...this makes me really want to fly by the seat of my pants on this trip and just go with the flow. Thank you.
                This is another question:
Is there a place you recommend that is inexpensive and close to Rosita's? I am taking a class there and we are looking for lodging for the 2/7-2/14 for two. I imagine I will meet your girlfriend there! :-)
                Thank you so much!!!
Also, do you think it is a good idea to lug around a tent "just in case" we need it?
                You're the best.

ADO is the bus line you'll want to use, and you can get there an hour earlier and get on, so you needn't plan ahead. I've used ADO dozens of time, and never even called ahead... Just got back from San Pedro: had a great time...and...I would never recommend visiting there. Saying that it's pretty gross right now is the understatement of the year!!! I don't think I'll recommend ever doing another school trip there. No wonder so many tourists don't come back, and tourism is at a major low... Looks like Caulker will be our choice from now on.

haha, those food stalls are long gone now; it's Cancun...with totally shitty music. It's weird seeing traffic jams backed up 3 blocks on an island 1% of 1% the size of Maui. Of course, your right: Hol Chan is still the place to see the sharks and rays.

I must concur with the good doctor above... on many a great point. It must be a Cayo thing but I don't think so. In any event you will have fun and you don't have to mortgage your soul to do it... some serious fun here.
