Moving to Belize, need info! :)

topic posted Sat, August 11, 2007 - 1:52 PM by  Jav
Hey everyone,

My name's Javier and I'm from Chile, but I've lived in the states most of my life. Me and my fianceƩ, (from California) are moving to Belize for like a year or so in November. We're unbelievably excited about this and just really pumped up about it, and I was just hoping to get some general info from fellow tribers. Like, what's the cheapest way of getting there? Is there ways to pick up work on the island (I'm fluent in English and Spanish, have worked in some tourism outfits, and she speaks English and sort-of Spanish and has experience working on sail boats, and is looking to get her Captain's licence and work in that general environment)? What's the best place to live? What's the visa scenario like in terms of working down there? etc, etc, etc......

Any and all info you could provide me would be really appreciated, here or pm me if you want!

Thanks a lot y'all, can't wait! :)

Well I spent over an hour trying to reply to this question and my post never made it here. I PM'd instead. I live in Belize 6 mos a year now and I moved a household. I bought property. I've been through the dances of moving, customs, know the permitting rules re: working, residency and all of that, even down to the most practical way to get the best deals on food, internet and a decent phone... I don't know everything but I know plenty through just plain experience. You work without a permit and get caught, you get deported, period, no waiting!

English is the language of the country, followed by Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and mayan dialects.

Anyway, that was a frustrating exercise in trying to answer a question to no avail here. I cannot recreate that answer now just due to my time today. Anyway, if anyone else has questions about moving to Belize, I'd be happy to answer them. It was a simple and not so simple effort. It gets tough on the Belize end sometimes. But it is oh so worth it!

Good luck and again, I'd be happy to help anyone who needs info but I'm not sitting her for an hour+ of straight typing to have it zapped : ). (Gee, I guess my patience level today is just a little less than yesterday. *sighs*)

Anyway, best of luck and again, I'd be happy to offer what I know to be good and true and may try again...

    Best-
    M. A.

Tribe tip # 72 Copy all posts before hitting submit. It's a bear to lose precious posts, especially when they are heart written...

Yeah... I generally do that Bridget. Why oh why did I forget tip # 72? Because I was so excited for this man to get some info that I learned the hard way or not. Well, they didn't make "Curb Your Enthusiams" for naught, even tho I am so not Larry Davidson...

          M.A., what a resource!

Hope to come down in the next few years, as soon as I get this last youngster raised.
Good to know such a rich resource of knowledge is available, thanks for your offering.
